Given the almost total radio silence from Namco Bandai on "Tekken vs Street Fighter," you might be forgiven for assuming that it had been canceled or condemned to development hell. Not so says producer Katsuhiro Harada -- the game is "still in development."
Back in 2010, Capcom and Namco Bandai announced a set of crossover fighting games pitting fighters from their most famous franchises against one another: "Street Fighter X Tekken" would use the 2D game engine that powers "Street Fighter IV," and "Tekken X Street Fighter" would use "Tekken"'s 3D mechanics.
Capcom held up their end of the bargain last year, but "Tekken X Street Fighter" has been a no-show so far.
"There are several reasons why we haven't released any updates," Harada explained to Siliconera. "One of the reasons is, 'Street Fighter X Tekken' was released. That still had updates until recently."
"It was not just 'Tekken' fans and 'Street Fighter' fans merging, there seems to be a whole new community growing around that title that wasn't playing either of the titles up until that point," he continued. "That was very unexpected, but quite cool. It's something we want to take care and grow."
"Rather than throw out our title right away while those people are still interested in [Street Fighter X Tekken] we are looking for the right time."
Fair enough, but when is the right time going to be? "We are making progress, but everything is secret so we can't say anything about that," Harada finishes. Of course.
In the meantime, Namco Bandai's hands are full to bursting with fighting game projects: "Tekken Revolution," a PlayStation 3-exclusive, free-to-play title was released in June, "Soul Calibur II HD Online" was just announced, and development on the new "Super Smash Bros." is presumably in full swing.
