Having just recently finished Tomb Raider and I found myself thinking about this issue.
Things need to change in gaming if we honestly expect girls to take the medium more seriously and actually consider gaming something that they can get into and enjoy.
I am not taking about the hard core gaming girls that already exist, I am talking perhaps more of a younger generation – girls growing up and looking at gaming. Thinking about my daughter.
For too long and still, woman in gaming are portrayed as big breasted, half naked characters who need rescue. Stuck in a castle waiting for an overweight Italian plumber to save them.
They should not need this kind of rescue anymore. It should be the turtle monster who should be afraid of them.
They don't need huge breasts and skimpy clothing.
They need to look realistic. Like a normal girl would. How do we expect girl gamers to identify with Dead Or Alive Beach Volleyball? Woman with breasts bigger than their heads?
Things are improving though. The new Tomb Raider is a great example. Lara is portrait as a realistic person. A girl with normal sized breasts. Wearing normal clothes. A girl able to take care of herself without any Italian plumbers around. She still has her femininity – she is still a girl, but she can kick ass too.
I also finished Bioshock Infinite last weekend
(read my review at The Deal Breaker:
http://www.thedealbreaker.co.za/2013...o-game-review/)
Again Elizabeth is a great female character in her own. Yes, Booker rescued her, but if you follow the story it becomes clear that she is actually saving him.
She never hides behind Booker. In many cases Booker relies on her and in fact I found myself over and over relying on her powers just to survive an onslaught of enemies attacking from all sides. Again she is still a girl with realistic female characteristics, but dressed appropriately, normal breasts and strong willed.
The upcoming Beyond Two Souls? Again a girl able to take care of herself. Looks realistic.
As my daughter grows up and watches me play games, I need to be able to show her that it is something she can also enjoy and the last thing I want to show her is Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball. I would like her to see female characters she can identify with.
Please, game developers – woman also need armor!
